More accurately, it's pre-OS X *software* rather than pre-OS X *operating
systems* that use the newline = \r convention. Plenty of such software
still runs on OS X, and it's more or less unpredictable what you get
nowadays: there are even two versions of Perl, a Unix one and a Mac Classic
one, e.g., which can cause confusions, since Perl's "\n" means 0x0D rather
than 0x0A in the Mac Classic version.
