I don't know.  I never tried to see whether this would be possible or
easy in Patch.

The advantage of the current code is that it is already there and
works quite well in the Windows environment, provided that you use
"--binary" where appropriate.

I cannot speak for Paul, but the usual answer to this is "it depends".
It depends on how hard it is to make Patch portable to more compilers,
and how clean are the changes that are submitted for that purpose.  If
you can craft changes that don't pollute the mainstream sources with
ugly ifdef's, those changes have better chances of being accepted.
