Sorry, I don't follow.  I've re-read the whole thread and also the
code in the latest coreutils' shred.c, but I still don't see why 8.3
filesystems are relevant to the letters in nameset[], why Jim thinks
lower-case will cause waste on case-insensitive systems, and why Paul
thinks the code will ``rapidly decrease the length to 8'' on 8+3
systems.  I'm probably missing something, but what?
