I cannot recognize the reason for the behaviour you decribe.

But I could suggest you to try various Windows/DOS ports of gawk, from
the following URLs:

http://www.cygwin.com
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net
http://www.delorie.com
http://unxutils.sourceforge.net

Perhaps you will have more luck with some of them.  Or perhaps you will
be able to find the answer in a FAQ or docs of some of them.

I don't know whether any of the other receivers of this bug report
will be able to diagnoze the problem.   It would help if you wrote
which of the ports do you use.
