I finally had a chance to get back to this, and rebuilt gawk 3.1.3 with
GCC 3.3.1, and this error went away.  I'm not quite sure what that means,
particularly given that I'd tried with the vendor compiler, but whatever
the issue is, it appears to be fixed when using GCC 3.3.1 on IRIX.
