The bug has already been solved and a patch is available from
http://mail.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-utils/2003-04/msg00032.html
If you could try it and tell us whether is solves your problem, we'd be glad.
(It appears only with certain versions of kernel and/or libc.)

It's wise decision, unless you need a new feature from 3.1.2 or unless you
experience other problems with 3.1.1.
