too large to archive

Sorry, I should have specified the command:


tar cvf - $backupdirs 2>>$LOGFILE |  /opt/local/bin/gzip  >  archive.tgz

I am guessing it is a problem in using a pipe  since I can not duplicate
w/o the pipe, and will test further.
