tar recovery

Dear madam, sir,

since about 2 days I have a major problem. My windows failed (again) and I tried to backup my documents via Linux, which was also sharing this harddisk. I tarred my documents, but when my windows was re-installed and i tried to reset the documents I found out that almost all filenames were cut-off. So I found one directory where about 300 files all were named `i`. They used to be in a directory named ´images´. I tried to restore them but they (of course) tried to overwrite each other, because they have all got the same name. Therefor I first have the suggestion to let tar report when a filename-lenght is to long to store in the tarfile. When I tarred the files, tar did not report that. And second I have the question if there is anything I can do to restore my documents. This is really important, because there were over 20000 documents in there, also for school and so on.

I am really looking forward to your reply,

kind regards,

Joost Reede,
the Netherlands.
