grep 2.5: 8 of 10 tests failed

I am trying to install grep 2.5 on the platforms I am sysadm'ing: i686
Linux, sparc Solaris 2.8, alpha Digital Unix. On all the three, grep has
been configured with:

./configure --with-included-gettext --prefix=...

and compiled by gcc 3.0.4 . "make check" gives, on all the three
environments, the following diagnostic:

make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/mlinux/mlo/grep-2.5/tests'
/bin/sh: ./warning.sh: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission denied
FAIL: warning.sh
/bin/sh: ./khadafy.sh: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Permission denied

make[2]: *** [check-TESTS] Error 1

/bin/sh is GNU bash 2.05a.0(1) on Linux, GNU bash 2.03.0(1) on Solaris,
and the alphaev56-dec-osf4.0d default Bourne Shell interpreter for Digital
Unix. Running "make check" as root does not change anything. Apart from
the failures, grep 2.5 seems to work correctly.

Any suggestion? Please, do not say "install"; if so, what is the meaning
of having checks?
