Yes, that's the hold-up; we don't have a complete fix yet, and I'm
reluctant to install a change that doesn't really solve the problem.

Can you two write a complete fix?  I'm pressed for time.  Ideally the
fix would be relative to the latest test release, in
<ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/tar/>.
