Try using a staging area. Make a $HOME/stage dir and then do all configures
with `configure PREFIX=$HOME/stage`. Then you'll have bin, lib, usr/bin,
man, etc. in your stage dir and, if you set your PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH
variables appropriately, all your installed software will work just
tickety-boo.
