Chinese filenames on CD-ROM invisible

I tried lots of GNU Utils to copy files with Big5 Chinese characters
in the names off of a CD here on Mandrake 7.2 to the hard disk.  Of
the 30 files, only the ones with an English word at front got copied,
and all the Chinese in the filenames disappeared.  Indeed, the only
way I know there was 30 files is I copied the files with Windows to
the hard disk, and from there to GNU/Linux no problem.  OK, so is the
problem instead with the Linux CD driver or something?
