Actually, the --help text is correct (this is also grep 2.4.2):

  -C, --context[=NUM]       print NUM (default 2) lines of output context
                            unless overridden by -A or -B
  -NUM                      same as --context=NUM

It's the man page that's incorrect (and the info file contains the same error).
