I don't consider that to be 'quite well'. Even one segfault is too many.

Jan.Djarv found a bounds violation that may explain the problem. If
you have the chance, please try the fixed version at:
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.13.22.tar.gz
If you get even one segfault, please report it. Ideally I'd like to
be able to reproduce the bug and fix it.
