ar bug ????

Sir/Ma'am:

    I am using the GNU ar utility under Caldera Open Linux 2.2, kernel
2.2.5, ar v 2.9.1. This version seems to have a limit on filename length
of about 14 or 15 characters, which is problematic for me. Does the
current binutils package include a newer ar utility ? Can this (newer or
not) version be configured to use longer (unlimited) filenames ? Thanks
