File size limitation on gtar

We have downloaded and compiled the version of gzip that will compress large
files. However, we have found that this limitation is in gtar.

We are trying to backup our database server, which has many large Oracle data
files.

When we use the command:

gtar -czvhf . /dev/rmt/2

we get the error

gtar: Cannot add file oradata4/oft20/data/temp02.dbf: Value too large for define
d data type

If we gzip the file using the newer version of gzip, it works--so the
limitation seems to be with gtar.

Is there a newer version of gtar that does not have this limitation? If not,
are there any plans for a version that handles large files?

Thanks,
