Hello everybody at GNU :)
I downloaded binutils 2.10.1 a few days ago, and I've compiled
and installed it on my systems (hand made Linux-i386 2.2.18 distro)
without any problems, but I got some stuff installed under my
/usr/i586-linux-gnu/ directory.
It's the same problem I have with other GNU developement tools: I
understand that GNU devel tools are designed to be cross-platform,
and so the install directories are chosen to be adecuate for that,
but since I work and develop onto a hand made embedded Linux distro I
like to have my tree as flat as I can have without getting into
trouble, and I cannot do that with binutils.
Fortunately I can by hand delete the contents of the
i586-linux-gnu directory and move the ldscripts to other directory,
since 'ld' searchs for them correctly in other places, but: how about
allowing the change of those directories through the configure
script? I can change the prefix, the datadir, etc... but I cannot
change the 'scriptdir', nor 'tooldir', etc... Why?
Well, anyway, you've done, as always, a great job with binutils.
Thanks to you I'm able to develop software without spending lots of
money and without blindly rely on the tools, since I have the
sources.
Thanks a lot for binutils and for the rest of GNU developement
tools. You're invaluable.
