Question about compile/check of gettext/glibc.2.2.1 |

Hello,
I have a gettext/glibc.2.2.1 compilation/installation problem that I hope you
can point
me in the proper direction on what things I need to read up on how to
resolve it. I've tried a whole slew of things and I just don't know
where to look for more information. I should point out that I'm pretty
ignorant about linux administration.
I've recently wanted to update my version of BIND and wu-ftpd, both of
which complained I didn't have libc.so.6, so I grabbed glibc.2.2.0.tar
and the linuxthreads/crypt add-ons.
I attempted to compile it, and it complained about gettext. Looking in
the FAQ, I saw that gettext is required to build glibc. So I grabbed
gettext (the alpha, as the FAQ stated) and ./configure and make seem
to work w/o problems, but make check complains that it can't load
libc.so.6
I noticed that glibc.2.2.1.tar was available so I tried compiling with
that with the same results.
I seem to be stuck in a loop, I can't properly make/install
glibc.2.2.1 because it requires gettext, but I can't properly
make/check gettext because it wants libc.so.6
At this point I probably did something I shouldn't have - I thought
that maybe if I went ahead and installed gettext anyway (since make
didn't complain with errors), I could get a good compile/installation
of glibc.2.2.1. So, I installed gettext, and then made/installed
glibc.2.2.1. However, anything I build now (that uses libc.so.6) gives
me segfaults, so I'm assuming it's because I improperly made/installed
gettext and glibc.2.2.1.
Please, any suggestions on what I need to look into so I can resolve
my problem?
Thank you very much for your time, it is greatly appreciated.
