Follow-up Comment #1, bug #35829 (project pspp):

I've wondered for a while whether we should have a way to format data in such
a way that the width is only a "hint", that is, if the data cannot fit in the
allotted space, we use more space than allotted.  This seems suitable for
situations like this.
