Possibly.  I don't think it makes a lot of difference either way.
Smake was intended to be for the benefit of developers only, so they
should know how to extract themselves from these situations.  

A better way might be to write Smake to accept flags which get passed
to configure.

     I only saw only use of a colon in the index, so I removed it.
     Does that fix the problem?
