i still use master on my workstation; these days with-cairo in the hopes
of avoiding font-related crashes.
(i had added with-cairo quite a while back when it made no difference
to fonts, but removed it for a time bacause xft: was so much better.
but now cr: is mostly ok, so am back to with-cairo.)
after re-reading my original message, i agree that this seems fixed;
both with-cairo and without-.
