hi eli,thanks for your response. I should have waited longer! - but i decided instead to upgrade my suse system to leap 15.2 so that all the x11 software was up to date. This was successfull and emacs and xemacs run ok. the default version of emacs is still 25.3, so i'll make sure i update emacs to the latest release (27.1).
