Languages...

I was looking at the list we provide, looking for the languages my
colleagues at work use. Most of their languages can't be entered
because, coming from southern India, their first language is of
Dravidian origin. Dravidian isn't one language, it's many including:
tamil, malayalam, and kanada. Tagging entries as "dravidian" doesn't
really help much...

The problem is with that ISO list of "major" languages: it's crazy to
start with. Cornish is apparently a major language, but Tamil is not...
Somehow I think we are more likely to get articles in Tamil than in
Cornish. I think we would be better off with our own list for
presentation and map that (if necessary) to the ISO names internally.

The next problem with languages is: how do you get moderators in
anything but english? If GNE doesn't already have moderators for a
specific language, the only way to get moderators appears to be to
submit 3 articles in (presumably) not your first language and to then
be accepted as a moderator. Of course, I assume you can't vote your own
work into GNE, so you would need to find a friend to submit 3 article
too... Basically, the three article rule works well for languages
already established in GNE, but not for introducing new languages.
