The "bank of perl machines" would be about 10 crap old
machines like P90s, you buy them for about £20 each
down at the auctions. We have a beowulf running atm at
school, we're trying to convince them to gibe it to us
when we leave so we can do some hosting, seeing as we
got all the machines and set it up ourselves. Its
cost-effective to have a bank of them. Especially when
you want to upgrade your power - just add a new
machine, no need for a new motherboard or expensive
RAM etc.

That's a completely different kettle of fish! That's
like saying football players train every day
intensively, so darts players should also run round
fields all the time! We're serving people, not asking
them to help us out, or am I mistaken?
