Here I go again.

I would like to summarize what the issues with the whole GNE project are, so far, in my head, so as to not get sidetracked on a tangent.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ Definition of the exact meaning of the Announcement.

I see so much contradiction within the document itself, I wouldn't mind a re-write from the author, or at least some clarification on the "decentralized" feature of the project.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ The Philosophy of Free

We make such a big deal about not using Microsoft product (not me personally, I use Microsoft products nearly exclusively--they are tools--but that's just me, use whatever you feel most confortable with), on a philosophical standpoint, saying: They stifle competition, they stifle free-speech, so on and so forth. Is denying extreme ideologies the same?

-------------------------------------------------------
+ The technical means of receiving article submissions.

Done via web forms, or via email.
There would be a conversion process, if required.
There would be an automated validation process (make sure the title exists, that there's no virus in the thing, and so forth.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ Storage format of the articles.

Articles will most likely be stored in XML, using the TEI DTD.

I would like to see additional XML files attached to the articles, to provide meta-data for the mirroring systems, and for digital signatures.

I would also not mind seeing the articels generated and stored in HTML, so that the scripting engines would not have to regenerate the HTML every single time for non-xml clients.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ Mirroring

Mirroring should be done automatically, selectively (no need to have 20 copies of the same article around the world. 3-4 should suffice. And mirroring should take into account the legal issues on hosting particular content in a particular jurisdiction.

Most likely the mirrors will not all be owned and operated by GNE. But that's for the future, because it may take years to clollect enough articles to choke GNE servers to the point they can't handle it (if ever). Also, mirroring may look a lot different in 3-5 years.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ Classification system.

The Classifiers would be allowed full access to all articles. They then could make any system they want. (pure search, yahoo-like, so forth)

The classifiers would not be GNE sponsored not GNE controlled. Anyone with a brain could do their own.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ Geographical legal issues on hosting.

We should not host content in a particular country that is illegal in that country. I think everyone agrees with that. In some coutries, the "security forces" are rather nasty, and I wouldn't want any GNE volunteer to server time/be tortured/get killed.

-------------------------------------------------------
+ Geographical legal issues on providing content.

That's for lawyers to decide. I'm not one, and I'm still very confused as to what we can and cannot get away with. A group of lawyers, even.

-------------------------------------------------------

I hope this little summary is better.

I wouldn't be worrying about content issues until there is content to be worried about.

Chris
