To build on:

They don't have to be complicated at all. Basically, the classifiers
will provide the only ``views'' into the repository. They will decide
how to classify and search articles (i.e. one might use the Dewey
Decimal system) and how to present them to the user.

It is pretty much decided that something like TEI will be used to
represent the articles in XML; the classifiers could use provided
XML->HTML tools and tweak them as needed to fit in with their
look. GNE could also provide a CGi script to do this on the fly (these
tools already exist, according to the TEI project).

If a classifier wants to provide searching ability, it would need to
build up a search index for all the articles it includes; how it does
so is up to it. We might provide a simple word-based search of
everything, for example.

Basically, the classifiers will handle all the meta-data about the
articles, while the backend handles the articles themselves. Mete-data
would include things like classifications (i.e. this is LoC category
XXX, or Dewey Decimal YYY), suitability for children,
legality-in-my-country etcetera.
