Commercial interests, governments, and religious organizations have historically been opposed to that idea because it generally threatens their power-base. Yes, freedom of speech is a Grand Idea, and although I think our world is more open than ever in the past, there are great strides still to make. There will be reticence and even resistance from the aforementioned groups.
The freedom to say what one wishes and the freedom to be heard is fundamental to a free society. True, some will abuse it, but I would rather it was abused by the common man in the exercise of this freedom than by government, corporate entity, or religious leadership in the repressing of this freedom.
I hope this clarifies the ongoing debate about moderation. Let's not try to govern away our fundamental rights, okay :)
Oh, and about the word format, I tend to agree that we should not have anything to do with it, since association with the Microsofts of the worlds only tend to further the funneling of idea through the narrow opening of money.
