In addition to the philosophical (and at times theological...)
arguments against external links, there are also practical problems.

One of our aims is to ensure that article content is persistent, and
external sites do not (at least not yet) offer that guarantee. Links
are a form of citation, and you wouldn't expect an encylopedia entry to
have citations that vanish without trace...

Another practical problem is in deciding what is a relevant citation,
and what is spam (without at least manually looking  at each link, and
even then there is no guarantee that the link will not be spam a
week/month/year later). If we don't use hyperlinks, we won't get much
spam. OK, people can cite websites in text, but at least you have to
copy/paste to land on them.
