The only way we can not use GIFs is to offer an
alternative. We can't expect people to submit PNGs
because few know about them and few will have software
that will create them. We could ask people to convert
them into PNGs or JPEGs, but then what if they have a
lot of pictures? It would be an awful lot of hassle
for them. We have to work out a practical solution
that will keep to free standards. This is probably a
repeated point, but can we not accept GIFs and
promptly convert them ourselves with a perl script
running something like vmware, mentioned earlier,
that'll convert GIFs into PNGs?
