I'm informed (I'm not a specialist in this so I don't know how true 
this is) that the PNG support in IE 5.5 is broken.

Also notice that PNG support is not integral to IE5, and it is not 
unusual for versions of IE pre-installed by manafacturers to have 
PNG support disabled.

BTW. Which version of IE are you testing it on, I've just done a 
clean install of IE3 and it doesn't have PNG support at all.

I believe a GPLed gif->PNG converter exists.
