An article that I am working on now contains 20 kB of text in the LaTeX
source file, but the html directory produced by latex2html contains 1.6 MB
worth of files. There are three figures and tens of small images for math
expressions. Although my article was not written as an encyclopedia
article, this is, I believe, indicative of the problem with using images to
represent math. Even an article without math content will, if it contains
a few images, have a size dominated by the size of its images.
