I think you underestimate:
1) People's laziness
2) How little can be written about some subjects
compared to others

If I were to write an article on Badminton, I would
write a fittingly short one. If I were to write an
article on the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, I would
write a long one. I may write a short one at first,
and somebody else would write a longer one. 
A collection of long articles may put a few people
off, but I don't think it is that big an issue and we
can't ask people to cut out information from their
articles.
