[NOTE: IANAL, so don't rely entirely on what I say here;
I recommend doing some investigation on your own.]
Yes, the author holds the copyright. However the document
must be released under the GFDL to be accepted for the
encyclopedia; the GFDL allows others to freely copy and
distribute the document.
See http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html for the text of
the GFDL.
Note that the GFDL also allows others to modify the
document, but forces the modified document to also be
restricted by the GFDL.
The author retains the copyright, and has whatever
protection against plagiarism and theft that a copyright
offers. The GFDL explicitly permits some behaviors that
would be considered violations of the copyright without
such permission.
