The reason I though separating the two is a good idea is this: suppose
you just want to link to the information about whales, but want the
latest (and presumably best) version?

True. I just think separating the version from the ID allows more
flexibility and a less cumbersome interface. Certainly, the
opportunity exists to link to specific versions of articles, but I
imagine this would be the exception, not the norm.
