The soname is only an artifact of SVR4 shared libraries, in general it
won't bare any relation to the package version number.  On other
systems the conventions are different, for instance gmp 4.1 installs
libgmp.sl.6 on hpux.

This all comes out of the libtool -version-info, we express our
interface compatibility and it does the rest.  No-one could claim any
of this is terribly pretty, but it does its job.
