I have now tried -DNO_ASM but failed with 3.1.1.

I get linking errors like this:
   /home/cfischer/tmp/checkerg95/gmp-3.1.1/mpf/div_2exp.c:64:
   undefined reference to `chkr.__gmpn_copyi'

which means that some part of gmp compiled correctly with checker,
the function names having a prefix of chkr., another part did not.

I will now check 4.0.
