Follow-up Comment #3, bug #35254 (project findutils):
If that is sort(1) of the GNU coreutils, then one could set the
environment variable TMPDIR to let the tool write the temporary
data somewhere else:

If the environment variable TMPDIR is set, sort uses its
value as the directory for temporary files instead of /tmp.
The --temporary-directory (-T) option in turn overrides the
environment variable.
