Follow-up Comment #5, bug #24140 (project findutils):

To split a hair here, we're not talking about an option to *trust*
d_type=DT_UNKNOWN.   We're talking about how find will know to assume that
DT_UNKNOWN means "it is impossible for this process to establish the nature of
thie file _at all_".

But the answer to your question has to be that the user shall not be forced
to provide a command-line mapping between path and AFS-filesystem-ness, for a
number of reasons.  The first and most obvious is usability, the second is
that some fraction of users will not even know this is necessary, and the
third is that it's either infeasible or very invasive to do this when the -L
option is in effect.

Your second question I cannot answer since I don't know enough about AFS,
sorry.
