DIR command (cannot display directories with documented option)

Hello,

I've been attempting to use the command:

dir -d

or

ls -d

to display only directory entries.  All I get is :

.


I guess I don't know exactly how this command is suppose to work but it seems 
displaying only directory entries should be rather easy.
