Hi Dan,
I think that the -S option is used to exclude
the amount of subdirectory bytes in the total.
Well, at least, that's what it does :-)
Yoda:/home/matthew/libxml-1.8.11/doc>$ /usr/local/bin/du
871 ./html
943 .
Yoda:/home/matthew/libxml-1.8.11/doc>$ /usr/local/bin/du -S
871 ./html
72 .
