I assume you refer to your subject line?

Hmm... I have never seen that error before myself. On a linux
machine I ran 'strings' on every program /usr/bin,/bin,/lib,/usr/lib
but turned up nothing relevant. This string does not appear anywhere
that I can find. I also grep'd through the fileutils source and found
nothing relevant there either. I think this message is a red herring
throwing you off of the true trail. I also don't know of any way that
changing named config files would cause your problem either and I
would not be too focused on that as the problem.

That is a normal consequence of having a severe boot time failure.
Normally a linux machine mounts the root partition read-only and
performs system checks. After those checks are complete it remounts
the root partition read-write and mounts the rest of the partitions.
Since this is not happening for you then at boot time you are having
severe failures which need manual attention. Usually this means
corrupted disk partitions. Sometimes a very bad thing. Sometimes
just needing a normal fsck to clean up a crash and then you are fine.

This is not a good forum for linux specific boot time problems. Since
the GNU fileutils is a cross platform set of tools it runs on many
OS's including HP's HP-UX, Sun's Solaris, IBM's AIX and Linux as well
along with many others. Linux is only one of the many platforms for
which fileutils is available. Many on this list normally operate on
other OS flavors such as HP-UX or Solaris and are unfamiliar with
specific details of Linux. In fact to me your problem seems
completely unrelated to GNU fileutils and is just a boot time problem
with Linux.

Probably your best source of help would be on the comp.os.linux news
groups such as comp.os.linux.setup or comp.os.linux.help.

Good Luck!
Bob
