gdm.pid --- mysteriously murdered?!

I made a change to my NAMED database config file, rebooted, and suddenly I get this error message which evidently is common.
I cannot boot in normal multiuser mode.
when I boot to 'linux single' I am in read-only status and cannot make ANY changes to ANYFILE, nor can I log in as ROOT or SU
I need some help on this, as this box has been up and running and STABLE for quite some time now - until I rebooted. NOW I'm hosed.
Thanks for your help!
