Jim,

As you suspect, I was using:

    $ mv --version
    
        mv (GNU fileutils) 4.0 
    
which is what `ships' with Redhat Linux 6.1 in the rpm fileutils-4.0-8.
Redhat Linux 6.2 ships with 4.0 as well in the rpm fileutils-4.0-21.
