Thanks Christian, sounds like it's exactly what I need! There are all sorts of .iso downloads at the links you provided. Most of them seem to be for different versions of GUI desktops, but it looks like the file I want (compact, stable, no GUI frontend, 64-bit system, with "rescue" utilities including ddrescue 1.23) is:
http://nightly.altlinux.org/sisyphus/tested/regular-rescue-latest-x86_64.iso(Though it may not hurt to have another CD with "regular-rescue-latest-i586.iso" as well in case I need to work on a 32-bit system.)
