The --force option is just a safeguard to prevent the inadvertent 
overwriting of partitions or whole disks, and is ignored for regular files.

Yes. just add the --force option and make sure that you use the right 
mapfile (aka logfile):

  $ sudo ddrescue --force --fill-mode=l- tmpfile /dev/sdc logfile
