One quick question - can pre8 use previous version log files (I have 1.18-pre6) but still use the new algorithm?
Yes it can. But this may not be true for next releases of ddrescue. Now that 1.18-pre8 reverses the direction after each pass, it has lost the "perfect resumability" feature during the copying phase. The direction of the first pass is determined by the presence (or absence) of the --reverse option, not by the direction when ddrescue was interrupted.
As I am not yet sure if this is a bug or a feature, I am not sure if adding a "direction" field to the logfile is a good idea. Probaby not, because command line should have priority over the logfile.
What may come handy is to add a "direction" field to the display, showing if the current pass is forwards or backwards. And maybe show also the pass number (like in retries).
Best regards, Antonio.
