A warning very similar to the one you suggest is already included in 
section 3, Using ddrescue safely:

"Some systems may change device names on reboot (eg. udev enabled 
systems). If you reboot, check the device names before restarting ddrescue."

I would be more than happy to offer such hints, if I knew them. Ideas
