I actually look at the logs and follow what the kernel is trying to do with the hardware.

tail -f /var/log/messages

In the case of a disk that is "undetected" but still appears in /proc/partitions, you can see what exactly is going on.  If a drive keeps resetting itself, you may have to keep trying to initiate ddrescue as fast as you can by hitting Cursor-Up and then Enter to re-run the last command.  Sometimes, it's not about what OS you are using, but getting the timing right.

Hi Folks,

I thought when I discovered ddrescue that it would be somewhat of a pancea,
and image anything I threw at it - I had after all heard very good things
about it, I was in some respects glad to get away from windows.

While I admit to still being in my early days of Ubuntu, I have discovered
that two disks I have tried to image lately do not show up under a fsdisk
-l, and accordingly I cant image in ddrescue.

They do show sometimes in dmesg that they have been assigned sdc or
whatever, but the rule seems to be if it dont show up in fdisk -l then it
cant be imaged - or am I missing something?

Anyone know any different?

Cheers

-AL
PS: On these defective disks I have had excellent success with getdataback
to get the files off, but of course getdata back doesnt do images.
