Hi,
I am very new to linux/gnu/ddrescue and am simply trying to recover
data off of a dieing drive.
Short background info:
Windows will recognize my drive but if I try to browse via explorer It
will just hang and stop responding. A diagnostic program told me that
my drive's multi-zone error rate SMART attribute failed. I used a
bootable Knoppix cd and was able to look inside the root of my drive
and even successfully read files in the root but It would stop
responding if I tried to navigate inside of a directory.
Experience with ddrescue:
I'm using an RIP Linux disk that has ddrescue on it. I did a simple
ddrescue command to clone my entire drive to a blank drive that is of
bigger capacity and it started to copy with the number of kB next to
"rescued:" steadily going up for about 5 seconds until it hit 42074 kB
where it stopped. It's stopped right now at 42074 and it says current
rate: 6755 kB/s and average rate: 7012 kB/s and it says "Copying data"
at the bottom but I don't think it is because the rescued # isn't
increasing. It says 0 errors and 0 errsize. I also tried to do ctrl+c
to interrupt it but it doesn't appear to be responding to that. I
will shut down my computer for now but is this a bug with ddrescue or
does this mean ddrescue simply cannot help my drive? Would you
recommend leaving it at the 42074 point for a long time to see if it
eventually gets further? I apologize if this isn't the correct list
for this question, like I said, I know very little about this stuff.
I would appreciate any advice/info VERY much. Thanks.
