I strongly object to committing any of this to the stable branch until
it has been thoroughly tested on feature.  This is a radical change to
core functionality that is purely an enhancement, not a bug fix, and has
very high risk (in my opinion) of breaking something due to a subtle
nuance that we haven't considered.
